Full Description
October 1986. Pipe trench immediately outside library railing, just left of first buttress of library wall left of entrance. Less than 0.3m (1 ft) deep.
Wall foundation, running at slant across trench (itself skewed to line of Millfleet because of curve around street corner) but wall possibly on former Millfleet Street frontage before rebuilding.
Late 19th century Ordnance Survey maps shows no corresponding alignment of buildings previously on library site - they follow the same curved boundary as library. 1830 (S1) and 1725 (S2) maps show site totally empty, a double line on 1725 map indicating possibly a boundary wall.
Could possibly be Greyfriars' precinct wall if it reached this far (see NHER 5477), or the wall whose north side is shown bordering St James's Street in Henry Bell's print of Greyfriars.
The wall was rubble with high proportion of freestone and clunch.
