Summary

This was an exceptionally important mansion in the post medieval period. It was under construction from 1622-1637 and was finished in the year that its patron Sir Roger Townshend died. It was constructed in a variety of styles including Classical, Mannerist and Palladian. The interior was remodelled in 1731 to a suitably grand standard and again using a variety of architectural styles. The house has game larders, drying yard and a brick-built 19th century watertower out the back.
