Map

Site or remains of windpump?
At point where drains in garden of Manor Cottage empty into common dyke.
Connection is by brick lined channel about 0.25m wide with iron sluice gate at south end. Spaced around this are remains of four brick pyramids, each with iron rod protruding from top. One pyramid to west of channel, 2m high and 66cm square at base; on east bank channel, pyramid to north 1.5m high and 66cm square base, to south 1m high 66cm square. Fourth pyramid to east again 1m high 66cm square base. All taper to flat tops. In centre of the four, on east bank channel, is brick lined pit and overgrown footings now filled with loose bricks found lying about; these have small square frogs. Brickwork is of late 19th/early 20th century type. Structure resembles base of a 'skeleton' windpump, with some piers demolished more than others. Note how the garden dyke system is cut off from the common drain at every other place where they approach; suggests pump was to regulate level of water in the dykes.
Nothing shown on current 1:2500 Ordnance Survey or (S1), or sale plan of gardens held at house (which does however reveal that the 'moat' like layout is due to rationalisation of dykes, and is not a moat.) Some straight lines on the sale plan each side of the main dyke could indicate an osier bed or similar.
E. Rose (NAU) 23 July 1987.
