Full Description
Large fragment of flint walling with buttress. Wall aligned east to west, flints, well coursed, apparently medieval.
Mistaken for ruins of church when first found by [1]. Nothing marked on 1926 25 inch Ordnance Survey map or 6 inch Ordnance Survey map; stands just within field northeast of true church site (NHER 6631). It is possibly part of the ruins reset here when material was removed in 19th century to build the present West Beckham church.
Information from [1].
E. Rose (NAU), 7 August 1987.
3 January 1988. Visit.
Flint footing about 30cm (one foot) thick, in form of half H surrounding cattle trough, but buttress not seen.
Though unusually thick, there is no other evidence of ecclesiastical origin. It seems very narrow for, as an example, a tower base but perhaps could be a porch. [1] says local people state parts of church ruins were moved by the army with a bulldozer in World War Two; but is this rather just the foundation of a small farm building?
E. Rose (NAU), 6 January 1988.
