Summary

Fieldwalking as part of the Fenland Survey recovered a scatter of prehistoric worked flints. A concentration of prehistoric burnt flints has also been recorded. This is indicative of occupation. Cropmarks on aerial photographs appear to show three undated ring ditches. The function of these is unclear.

Map

20 October 1987. Fenland fieldwalking. Reasonably well weathered soil, crop not generated. MTW ET.

Context 2 at 6451 9768. On edge of sandy ridge close to peat. MTW 140.
Small spread pot boilers, no flints. 19m north to south x 21m east to west at 0.8m OD.
R. Silvester (NAU), 20 October 1987.

For full details of wares, flint types, etc. see (S1).

23 July 1992. NLA air photography.
Three ring ditches noted within field.
D. Edwards (NLA), 1994.

These are large and unusual for ring ditches. Is this because they are actual barrows emerging from the peat; or a natural formation such as buried sand hills; or due to agricultural origin?
E. Rose (NLA) 10 October 1994.

(S2) shows the ring ditches as waterfilled pits with straight cuts leading from them to the field edge ditches as if to drain them. Their purpose is obscure; very few fields in the area have marl pits but here are three pits in two conjoined fields.
E. Rose (NLA), 25 April 2006.
