Full Description
4 July 1987. BKS Air Photography for Norfolk County Council Vertical Air Survey of Norfolk No.0092.
Positive cropmarks. Parallel ditches of trackway with junction.
D. Edwards (NAU) 3 March 1988.
Photocopy of air photograph (S1) in file.
January 2002. Norfolk NMP. (NGR corrected from original TF 737 416).
This site/feature has previously been recorded as a double ditched trackway. However, it appears more like a ditch or gully (or hollow way?) of about 10-15m across. It runs from TF7322 4102 to TF7263 4051. There is also the possibility of a bank running along its north-western side. There is considerable possibility that this feature is actually a natural feature.
The junction that was previously mentioned on the NHER is not apparent, though there is the possibility that some form of trackway runs from TF7345 4071 to TF7330 4077. However, this is not clear and it does not appear to have a junction with the main ditch (though it does point in that general direction). There is also the possibility that there could be a continuation of this feature beyond the main ditch up towards the diagonally opposite corner of the field. The significance of this feature is unknown, the fact that it appears to cross the field from one corner to another does arouse suspicion.
Finally, previously it was recorded that the main 'trackway' continued further to the north east (crossing 2 more fields according to the sketch map). That is unclear from the aerial photographs seen. However, there is a V/Y shaped 'scoop' on the same alignment, further in that direction, which again has a possibly natural appearance.
The date, origin and function of this feature is unclear.
H. Clare (NMP) 15 May 2003.
