Summary

Metal detecting in 1988 recovered an assortment of metal objects, including a 1st-2nd century BC Roman coin and two post-medieval thimbles.

1988. Metal detecting.
Republican denarius 1st-2nd century BC.
Medieval? Copper alloy openwork finial (but colour of metal suggests Late Saxon).
17th century buckle.
Pewter plate base fragment with zigzag ornament.
17th century thimble with bald top and incised lines as border.
18th century brass thimble.
Large rumbler bell.
Identified by A. Gregory and S. Margeson (NCM).

Medieval openwork finial (furniture fitting) found in 1988 may be Late Saxon, a bead or attachment from a censer - see NHER 36998 Thornage (before 7 November 2003).
