Summary

In 1989 a trench was dug into a marsh with a mechanical excavator. Clay and peat sediments were exposed and, about 2m below the surface, two pieces of worked timber were found.

Site in marsh reported; [1] provided information and grid reference.
Mechanically dug trench to depth of about 2m examined under water. Grey clay at about 1m with freshwater shells. Peat below, and at base, thrown up by excavator, artificially bevelled point on large trunk of split oak and one 'jointed' timber.
