On Faden's map of 1797 (S1) the area located by this grid reference lies at the northern end of an L-shaped piece of woodland entirely surrounded by common land, Culham Green to the north and droveways in other directions. This piece may have been an intake from the waste (an 'assart') perhaps in the 12th century. That this pottery concentration represents a settlement site is given some confirmation by the appearance immediately to the south on an RAF vertical aerial photograph of 1946 (S2) of a substantial earthwork ditch linking the west and east sides of the field. This feature changes its alignment twice and there are suggestions of other slight earthworks, perhaps house platforms, close by. The ditch may have formed the southern boundary of a property or properties butting north on Culham Green (Colder Green on Bryant's map of 1826 (S3), now Coldham Green).
A. Rogerson (HES), 8 February 2013.
