Summary

This house is thought to date to 1596 although it has been suggested that it was built in the early 17th century. The building has two storeys and attics and eight bays with a two storey canted bay at south end. A red brick façade was added in the 18th century along with sash windows with flush frames. No. 2 has a pedimented and pilastered doorcase. There are two chimney stacks bearing pairs of octagonal shafts. Inside is a late 16th-century staircase and good plaster ceilings.

Listing Description excerpt:
"Three houses, converted to municipal offices in 1989. Very late 16th century (said to be 1596) with a mid-18th-century red brick façade and a 19th-century canted bay added to the right. Mid 20th-century concrete pantiles.
EXTERIOR: Two storeys and dormer attic; eight-window range. There are two doorways to the right, both six-panelled...Platband between the floors with a moulded under surface...Modillion and dentil eaves cornice. Gabled roof with four gabled dormers...Ridge stack left of centre and the internal gable-end stack to the south both are late 16th century and both have transverse plinths carrying twin octagonal flues. The north gable is rendered and carries over the remains of the archway to Row 76. The rear has a three-storey cross-wing rendered and whitewashed…
INTERIOR: the three interiors have been knocked together with that to No.3 [NHER 4335]. The entrance is from the door to the former No.2B. Reception area to left (formerly in No.2) has a late 16th-century plaster ceiling divided by a plastered beam with sunk-quadrant mouldings…The staircase to No.1 is 20th century. The first-floor front room to No.2B has a late 16th-century plaster ceiling also...The next room north (in No.2) has early 19th-century large-frame panelling and egg-and-dart cornices over all three doors. Front range roof of chamfered tie beams, slightly cambered, and rebuilt above in mid 20th century."

Detailed survey by [1]. Report (S2) in file dates the building to the 17th rather than the late 16th century, but this is debateable.

Proposals to instal lead flashing to the front elevation, secondary glazing to all windows, installation of draught proofing system, replace existing pan tiles with reclaimed clay pantiles and minor internal plastering.
