Summary

A large enclosure, probably of medieval date, is visible as a cropmark on aerial photographs. The enclosure may be the remains of a medieval moat. Medieval pottery, oyster shells and post medieval clay pipe were found during the construction of a new gas pipeline.

Shows sub-circular feature as probable slight earthwork in what appears to be re-seeded grass.

July to August 1989. Watching Brief.
Bushey Common to Saham Grove Gas Pipeline (Area 3).
Route walked following removal of topsoil and excavation of pipe trench monitored.
Large pits seen in section below much medieval pottery.
Other finds included oyster shells and clay pipe stem.
Finds donated to Norwich Castle Museum.

10 July 1992. NLA air photography.
Revealed a large subrectangular or subcircular enclosure consisting of two dark lines separated by a light band (?infilled moat?) on the site where the pits and concentrations of medieval pottery were seen in the pipe trench.
