Full Description
September 1989. Found with metal detector. Part of large scatter NHER 28757.
Sceat.
See note in file.
A. Rogerson (NAU), 4 October 1989.
On or near site of above find.
Copper alloy zoomorphic brooch in form of dolphin in the round; slight stub of dorsal fin, with slight recess in front, probably for a gem (missing). Tail tapers to a spring of at least one turn, at nintey degrees to axis of dolphin. Bronze fragment of uncertain function but presumably part of brooch adheres or is attached to underside, and appears to have continued in same direction as spring/pin etc, (S1). For comparision see Hattatt 1987 (S2). 1st century AD?
A. Rogerson (NAU), 5 December 1989.
Further consideration of the zoomorphic dolphin object suggests this is not a brooch. Function and date (within Roman period) uncertain.
See correspondence in file.
D. Gurney (NLA), 15 March 1990
