Summary

Fieldwalking and metal-detecting at this location between 1989 and 2024 recovered Roman, Middle Saxon and post-medieval pottery sherds; Roman and medieval coins and a range of other, Bronze Age to post-medieval metal objects. These metal finds include a Late Bronze Age socketed axehead fragment; Bronze Age copper alloy metal-working debris; Roman brooches, a probable bracelet fragment and lead steelyard weights; Early Saxon brooches; an Early/Middle Saxon gold pendant; a Middle Saxon pin; a Late Saxon/medieval key; a medieval strap end, bar mount and copper alloy cauldron fragment; a medieval/post-medieval spur rowel and shoulder bolster from whittle-tang knife and post-medieval buckles. It has been suggested that the nature of the Early Saxon finds from this and two adjacent sites may indicate the presence of a cemetery of this date.
