Full Description
Possible moat depicted just beyond the town enclosures on (S1). Site now built over. Information from former Cambridgeshire site HER 05545, transferred to Norfolk 1990.
E. Rose (NAU) 3 September 1990.
(S2) shows west, south and part of north arm of moat, with slight projection at north west corner. North east area missing. Building NHER 25963 sits inside north arm. Land parcel on (S2) mirrors shape.
December 2014. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of groundworks associated with construction of new detached garage/study building and associated driveway.
The foundation trenches for the new building reached geological deposits but revealed no archaeologically-significant remains. The route of the new driveway was subject to only a relatively shallow strip, which did not reach the base of the topsoil layer. An east-to-west aligned dip was though noted that was probably associated with the backfilled feature thought to potentially represent the southern arm of the moat.
A small number of unstratified finds were recovered during this work, including a single medieval pottery sherd, post-medieval pottery sherds and a late medieval or post-medieval brick fragment. The majority of these objects were found along the route of the new driveway, mostly in the vicinity of the possible moat.
See report (S3) for further details.

August 2017 and March 2018. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of groundworks associated with construction of new bungalow at TF 5118 0371 (Plot 3).
Although this building plot appears to have potentially coincided with the southern arm of a possible moat no archaeologically-significant features or deposits were observed within the excavated foundation trenches.
No finds were recovered.
Information from draft report. See NHER 69145 for further details.

December 2019. Trial Trench and Excavation.
Archaeological mitigation undertaken prior to the construction of new bungalow at TF 5117 0374 (Plot 4). When an initial trial trench exposed archaeologically-significant remains the work proceeded immediately to the full excavation of the building footprint.
A number of features were recorded, including two linear features thought to represent the robbed-out south and east walls of a rectangular structure. This building would have lain adjacent to and parallel with the southern arm of the probable moat discussed above. Part of a brick structure survived within one of the wall trenches and the fills of these features produced a single late medieval pottery sherd and a small assemblage of post-medieval pottery. A rectangular stone structure made of unworked limestone blocks was probably associated with this building, although its nature is uncertain. It is suggested to have been the base of a fireplace surrounded by the remains of a stone floor but may have been a more structural foundation. A single fragment of late medieval floor tile was found amongst the stones. A number of pits were also recorded. No dating evidence was recovered from these features, although the larger examples could be seen to truncate the wall trenches and were therefore almost certainly of post-medieval or later date.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
