NHER 2587 (Find Spot record) - Unprovenanced multi-period prehistoric finds, Methwold Fen (Methwold, poorly located)

Various prehistoric objects found during the late 19th century and early 20th century in the Methwold Fen area of Methwold parish, but with no additional information regarding provenance.

FINDS IN THE NORWICH CASTLE MUSEUM

This museum holds a Bronze Age copper alloy palstave that was found amongst rubbish in a cottage outhouse in Methwold (NWHCM : 1963.379.2). This looped palstave has an evenly expanded blade and shield and stem decoration. It is believed that this object was probably from Methwold Fen. Information from (S1). This object is also listed in (S2).

This museum also hold a Bronze Age spearhead that was found in Methwold Fen in 1936 (NWHCM : 1936.89). This object is described on (S1) as a Class IV bronze spearhead with leaf shaped blade and loops in socket. Length 165mm, width 35 mm width. See photograph (S7) in file. See also (S3). FINDS IN THE KING'S LYNN MUSEUM

According to (S5) this museum holds a small assemblage of Mesolithic flints from Methwold Fen, comprising 4 flakes/blades and 1 scraper. The present location of this material is unclear.

FINDS IN THE BRITISH MUSEUM

The British Museum Sturge Collection includes a Mesolithic tranchet aze that is marked as being from "Methwold Fen" (unregistered). This obect is described in (S5).

According to (S6) this museum holds a pebble macehead from Methwold Fen. These prehistoric objects are not closely datable, having been found in both Mesolithic and later prehistoric contexts. This find was previously noted under both NHER 4866 (where it had been erroneously identified as Neolithic) and NHER 11492.
