Summary

Metal detecting and trial excavations have led to the discovery of a possible Roman settlement and multi-period finds. The Roman objects included coins, a brooch and pottery sherds. Other artefacts include an Iron Age Iceni coin and Middle and Late Saxon pottery sherds.

Full Description

20- 21 November 1990. Trial Trenching and Metal-detecting Survey.
Evaluation in advance of Anglian Water extension to pumping station.
Iceni 'gold' stater.
Eleven Roman coins.
Five Roman sherds.
Two Middle Saxon. Late Saxon sherds (Ipswich ware, ?St Neots ware).
?Post medieval metalwork.

Coin and finds lists in file.
The area of these finds will not be affected by the proposed 1991 development, except for that of the Iceni stater, so will be available for future excavation.
