Summary

Survey work in 1991 noted a chalk and carstone wall on this site, visible as longitudinal elevation in the southern edge of a pond belonging to Park Farm. Only two courses of the wall survive, and the side of the pond is being eroded by deer in the field. It is suggested that this may be the site of St Thomas' Chapel, instead of NHER 1535.

Map

Pre February 1990. Earthwork Survey.
Survey of earthworks in area of grassland, on possible site of mill.
Chalk and carrstone wall, visible as longitudinal elevation in southern edge of a pond belonging to Park Farm. Only two courses of the wall survive - the side of the pond is being eroded by deer in the field. Is the wall the same as site NHER 16501? - NHER records this as about 50 metres to south. Wall is set in sandy loam matrix and survives at least partially for a length of 5 metres. Suggested as site of St Thomas's Chapel instead of site NHER 1535.
See published article (S1) and report (S2) for further details.
Compiled by M. Leah, 26 November 1990.

July 1995. Geophysical Survey.
Resistivity survey of 60m x 30m area to south of pond, on possible site of St Thomas' Chapel.
The previously identified wall was represented by a narrow, linear, high-resistance anomaly running east-to-west along the northern edge of the area examined. A second, parallel anomaly was identified approximately 10m to the south which may represent the footings of a related wall. It was however noted that there was no evidence for any cross walls linking these two features, so this interpretation remains uncertain.
For further details see report (S3) and letter and preliminary plots in file for NHER 1514. This survey is also noted in (S4).
Previously recorded (in error) under NHER 1535.
Compiled by D. Gurney (NLA), 17 August 1995. Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 9 February 2015.
