Summary

A 17th century and later two storey rendered timber framed former house, now a shop, extensively restored in the late 1940s. Originally on the site was a large courtyard house belonging to the Paston family and extending over all of Wright's Court. The present house was built after the 1507 fire, but the two parts have long been separately occupied. Number 41 has a good early 19th century double shop front with thin columns and a jettied upper floor with exposed studwork and a row of five traceried windows. Only the central pair of these are now open, and these have been altered, but their combined effect must have been impressive. Number 43 has a pilastered doorcase, a first floor mullioned window and two gabled dormeres, one large and one small.

See Norfolk Industrial Archaeology Society fiche for further details of foundry in the basement for making iron scale beams (the balancing part of a weighing machine), stamped J BARNES FECIT and dating from about 1850. The house is dated to 'before 1550' but this seems to be on documentary evidence alone.
E. Rose (NLA), 10 August 1998.

Smithy listed in White's and Kelly's directories from 1845 to 1929 (S2)(S3). Today the basement still contains the brick forge and bellows dating to around 1850-90.
