NHER 26187 (Building record) - Rear of 31, St Giles Street

April 1986. Listed, Grade II.
Listing Description excerpt:
"Former house now warehouse. 16th century, heightened by one storey and altered by the insertion of casement windows and door in the 18th century. Rendered flint and brick rubble, the second floor is rendered timber frame. Pantile roof. Three storeys, six bays. The building is at right angles to and set back from the street line...Hipped roof. Ceiling beams with simple stops and a large, off centre stack."

This block is amongst the buildings listed in thesis (S3), which considers the 13th- to 17th-century buildings of Norwich. It is described as a 16th-century two-storey building with flint rubble walls. The position of the stack suggests that it was either a three-cell building or a building with one large and one small room. A second floor was added in the 18th century. At the time it was examined its interior reflected its 20th-century use as a storeroom.
