Summary

No archaeologically significant features or deposits were observed during groundwork at this site in 1971 and no finds were recovered. It should however be noted that subsequent archaeological work undertaken under more controlled conditions immediately to the east has revealed well-preserved medieval remains lying beneath deep soil deposits (see NHER 64329 for further details).

Map

1971. Field Observation.
No finds reported or seen from many holes.
Compiled by W. Milligan (NCM).
Information from (S1).
Amended by P. Watkind (HES), 17 July 2020.

January 2014. Desk-based Assessment.
Archaeological Heritage Statement produced for large proposed development site comprising all land between Rose Lane and Mountergate to east of Boulton Street and St John's Street.
This assessment concluded that remains of Late Saxon to medieval date could well survive in this area, particularly as a geotechnical investigation had demonstrated the presence of extensive made ground deposits.
See report (S2) for further information and NHER 64329 for details of archaeological investigations undertaken at the site immediately to the east.
P. Watkins (HES), 17 July 2020.
