Summary

Work on this area in 1990 recovered copious oyster and mussel shells, and a burnt area. The western part of the building incorporates No 3 Quayside, which may retain 16th or 17th century floor joists, though the body of the building is now 19th to 20th century in date.

Allen and Page Warehouse, No 3 Quayside.

24 and 25 August 1990. Trial Trenching.
Two trial holes dug by JCB machine in advance of redevelopment.
Hole A at street frontage. 1.8m x 2.5m. 4.5m deposits; waterlogged. 1.9m oak pile (0.15 diameter) in situ, now removed. Copious oyster and mussel shell. One sherd Thetford type ware.
Hole B at rear of structure. 1.7m x 2.7m. 2.6m deposits. Burnt lens with charred material at around 2m. One sherd Thetford type ware.

The western part of the building incorporates No 3 Quayside (NHER 62434) which a source thinks may retain 16th or 17th century floor joists, though the carcass of the building is now 19th/20th century. [1]

The earliest industrial occupation of this site is recorded in directories from 1875 to the late 1930s which mostly includes the milling and/or trade of corn, cake, seed, coal, hay and straw.
The millers firm Allan and Page closed down around 1988.
Building 1: Brick and tile construction with possible hayloft.
Building 2: Front of building demolished to make large opening for sliding doors.
Building 3: Remains of shop frontage now mostly infilled with brick.
Building 4: Modern structure built to cover open yard area, steel and asbestos concrete.
