August 2005. Building survey.
Ahead of plans to convert nos 23 and 25 Wensum Street a building survey was undertaken. The party wall between the two properties is not a simple vertical division but follows differing vertical alignments on both floor levels and likewise the shop front associated with no. 25 extends southwards across part of the first floor elevation of no. 23. The reason for this is that initially no. 23 extended further to the north and the interior layout is a product of the creation of what is now no. 25. No. 23 is now two storeys high although a truncated staircase shows that a third floor level, more than likely dating from the 19th century, has been removed. No 25 is two storeys high and has a prominent 19th century shopfront with a recessed, off-centre door flanked with curved glass windows. A deep façade extends across the building between two consoles of unequal width. At first floor level the wall is faced with red bricks laid in Flemish bond and there is a single, boarded-up window with a flat, skewback brick arch immediately below a brick saw tooth cornice. The interior of no. 25 is in keeping with the 19th century façade and consists of two rooms of unequal size. As well as interior access the smaller of these two rooms has a doonway direct from the street which allows access to the stairs that are against the rear.
wall of the shop.
