Very tall red and black brick building known as Trowse Pumping Station though within City of Norwich. Constructed 1865-1871 by Bazalgette to pump sewage from the North and South Interceptor Sewers to Whitlingham Sewage farm or into adjacent river using three beam engines. Sewers fed into works by gravity and pumps were used for ejection only. System abandoned when New Mills Station open 1899. Trowse station modernised 1910 when Whitlingham sewage works replaced sewage farm. Modernised again 1961. Building externally in good condition, with some later additions/
alterations, but details of interior, machinery at present not known.
Not listed by English Heritage.
See notes from lecture on Norwich sewers in file. [1]
Compiled by E. Rose (NLA), 28 June 1993.
The original building (NHER 65662) is tall, with on the top floor three round-headed windows crossed by a cornice. Floors below apparently had similar windows. Three gabled single storey wings run south towards the road, the central of which has a clock in the gable and the date 1909.
Compiled by E. Rose (NLA), 18 January 1999.
