NHER 26404 (Building record) - No 24 Cattle Market Street

No 24 Cattle Market Street.
Known as Crystal House, this building was constructed between 1862 and 1863 (S6) as a show room for the engineering company Holmes and Sons.

The engineering works once extended a considerable distance to the rear of this building, as shown in early trade illustrations. Unfortunately the buildings were damaged by bombing, and by falling trees from the former cattle market, though it was later repaired.

Former Panks's works. Remaining building is former showroom. Built 1868 according to listing, 1863 according to sign on front; influenced by design of Crystal Palace. Glass front of two storeys with ten light full height windows having cast iron glazing columns with ornate bases. Rusticated masonry at each end. Hipped slate roof formerly with letters forming name of owners along ridge. The works once extended a considerable distance to the rear as shown in early trade illustrations which also depict the showroom on a slightly different form than at present, but this is probably due to artistic licence. Damaged by bombing and by falling trees from former cattle market, and later repaired.
In 1993 in use as toy shop.

Listing Description Excerpt:
"Showroom and shop, empty at the time of re-survey. 1868. Glass front with rendered brick and slate roof 2 storeys. 5 bays. Central double-doors. Panelled plinth. 10-light full-height windows to each floor with metal glazing bars between columns: cast-iron between windows and timber at each end. Fascia at first-floor level."
