Full Description
Undercroft. Brick vaulted on rubble walls. Probably annexe to unvaulted cellar, now destroyed. Oldest part early 16th century; in about,1600 one half of four centred vault removed and another arch inserted. Early 19th century stairwell added.
Situated half under numbers 7 and 9, a mid 20th century house, and half under number 5, demolished.
Information from listed building description November 1993 (S1); no previous record.
E. Rose (NLA), 20 December 1993.
March 1992. Field Observation.
Foundation trenches were observed, following the demolition of number 5, prior to rebuilding on the same site (no context sheets).
All was made-up ground except along the front (east) line of the existing standing buildings where the footings/lower part of the rear wall of an earlier building was revealed. (The existing line of the buildings is set back from the street frontage; compare with that of Pykerell's House to the north). This was brick (post medieval) with a semi-circular, banded brick buttress* on the outside (east). Depth of footings/wall not ascertained, but at least 0.3m below existing surface.
* 17th century stair turret footing (Robert Smith, personal communication).
No report produced.
P. Andrews and B. Ayers (NAU), March 1992. Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 20 February 2017.
