Full Description
1802 November/December. 'On Wednesday last some workmen were repairing a pump in the Boy and Cup public house in Lobster Lane, Norwich. At the depth of twenty-seven feet below the surface of the earth they discovered on one side of the wall a gothic entrance and a room ten by eight feet which it is supposed formerly belonged to a monastery.'
Reference (S1) supplied by source [1].
No Boy and Cup shown on 1880 Norwich Ordnance Survey. Could this be an older name for the Ironmongers Arms on the corner of St John Maddermarket and Lobster Lane (site NHER 26341) and if so is this connected with the unlocated undercroft (site NHER 853) if one assumes the depth was exaggerated? However if it is accurate, could this be a chalk mine gallery, the 'gothic arch' being imaginative?
E. Rose (NLA) 20 June 1994.
