Full Description
1995. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site by Cambridgeshire Archaeological Unit.
Late Saxon, medieval and post medieval pottery, animal bone and horn cores.
Foundations of 18th/19th century buildings overlying older structures, and former canalised river channel crossed by archway. Remains of cellars infilled early 20th century (at which time a ceiling of about 1540 was removed from the Waggon and Horses Inn on the site and built into the Flintknappers Public House at Brandon).

1996. Excavation.
This work revealed evidence for activity on the site from the 10th-12th centuries onwards. Several phases of timber revetment were identified and pits containing smelting waste were also excavated.
Report awaited. The results of this work are briefly summarised in (S3).
An archive associated with this work has been deposited with Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2025.172).

Assessment of proposed development site adjacent to the former New Mills.
