Summary

A watching brief undertaken in 1995 during the extension of the Notre Dame school playing fields recovered a number of archaeological features. Two Late Saxon or possible post medieval pits were noted, as well as a large number of post medieval cut features.

August 1995. NAU Watching brief.
On extension to school playing fields involving reduction of ground level, landscaping and some trenching. Three areas observed.
Area 1 (north of existing tennis court):
Up to 1m of modern makeup overlying another layer of modern soil makeup. Some post medieval cut features visible just to north of tennis court.
Area 2 (south of existing tennis court):
Around 20 post medieval cut features cut into natural overlain by modern makeup. Also two Late Saxon or possible post medieval pits. Unstratified post medieval pottery recovered.
Area 3 (south of main school building):
3m wide T-shaped trench, shallow topsoil, modern features only.
