Summary

The first reservoir was constructed on this site in 1849 to 1851, following an outbreak of cholera in the city. A second reservoir was constructed in 1872, when site was also ornamentalised, and gardens were added to either side in 1886. The importance of this area stems from this rare example of a utility made to look ornamental.
