Full Description
June 1991. Site visit.
House and warehouse, probably 16th century or earliest 17th. The building is aligned north-south along the street frontage with a carriage arch at the northern end. From this a long range runs west with an alley to the north. There is a parallel alley on the south side, separated from the west wing by a garden. These alleyways are typical of those found in the town leading to the quayside but in this case these are now blocked by the new courthouse.
The building is built of brown brick and is two storeys with five bays. The roof is of plain tiles.
Grand interiors with panelling of about 1700 reusing some early 17th century sections.
The non-domestic part of the west wing is known as the coach house and stables. This warehouse was converted to a ballroom in the 18th century. The 18th century panelling, fittings and fireplace of this room which may have been by Brettingham are now in the Rockhill Nelson Collection in Kansas City, Missouri, USA. A grand staircase hall was added but it is unclear whether this took place at the same time as the conversion of the warehouse to a ballroom, or at a later date.
Finds from the site comprised two blue and white tiles of the type found at 9 Stonegate Street (NHER 12082).

December 1951. Listed, Grade II*.
House. 17th century, remodelled early 18th century. Red brick laid in English bond. Plain tiled roofs. Two-storey front range to street with a cross wing running west, the gable of which is visible to right of centre. This rear wing flanks the south side of the entrance passage entered through an archway to the right of the front elevation. Square-topped surround to this entrance with a timber elliptical arch supported on diminutive Doric pilasters. Above is an early 18th century flush-frame sash with glazing bars. This bay is broken forward. Five similar sashes to the remainder of the elevation to the left, none with gauged arches. Timber eaves cornice below gabled roof. The south gable end is carried on a brick kneeler. South gable-end stack and central ridge stack. The internal passage arch is segmental with fielded and panelled timber reveals. Two early 18th century doorways to the elevation of cross wing, that to east with a segmental arch within a moulded eared surround and with a moulded hood. Panelled door. The western doorcase has fluted Doric pilasters and a developed metope frieze. Panelled door. Between the doors are two sashes with glazing bars within flush frames, the east one early 18th century, the other, larger one, a c1750 replacement. Over and adjacent to the carriage arch are two casements of c1700. It is reported that recent repairs to rear have exposed timber-framing and a massive stack.

April 2008.
Proposal to put in a new interior to the eighteenth century room and to remove conservatories to the rear of the house, allowing the rear elevation to be seen. The sill of a rear window is to be lowered and a new loggia and pergola are proposed.

H. White (NLA), 21 November 2008.
This house was owned by the Mayor of Lynn, Sir Lewis Whincop Jarvis, in 1862. He expended considerable effort ensuring that the lane which ran west to the river along the south side of his property was not reopened, it having been ordered to be gated at its western end in 1820.
