Summary

A small polished Neolithic flint axehead was found on the surface of this field in November 1965. A systematic fieldwalking and metal-detecting survey of this area in 2016 recovered objects of primarily post-medieval or later date. The small number of earlier finds included Mesolithic, Early Neolithic, Neolithic and ?Bronze Age worked flints and single ?Roman and medieval/post-medieval pottery sherds. The post-medieval or later finds included pottery sherds, ceramic building material fragments, clay tobacco pipe fragments, pieces of bottle glass, part of a porcelain child’s doll and various iron objects.

February 2016. Systematic Fieldwalking and Metal-detecting Survey.
Field survey of part of large proposed development area (Field 2).
Finds recovered included:
1 prehistoric flint flake.
1 Mesolithic flake.
1 Early Neolithic retouched flint flake and 1 flake.
1 Neolithic flake.
1 ?Bronze Age flint flake.
1 ?Roman pottery sherd.
1 medieval/post-medieval pottery sherd.
4 post-medieval pottery sherds, 8 pantiles, 3 ?pantiles, 2 ?bricks, 2 ?drain pipes and 5 clay tobacco pipe fragments.
23 post-medieval/modern pottery sherds, 4 pieces of bottle glass and 1 leg from porcelain doll.
Various post-medieval or later iron objects including 2 heel irons, 1 nail, 1 bolt, 1 ploughshare and 4 unidentified fittings.
1 undatable butchered animal bone (sawn, suggesting probably late medieval to modern).
