Summary

Metal-detecting between 1990 and 2015 recovered a Neolithic/Bronze Age retouched flint flake; Iron Age and Roman pottery sherds; Iron Age, Roman, medieval and post-medieval coins; post-medieval tokens and jettons; a post-medieval coin weight and a range of other Bronze Age to post-medieval metal objects. The metal finds include brooches from all the periods; a Bronze Age ring; a Roman lock-pin, cosmetic mortar, stud or decorative nail and spoon fragment; an Early Saxon brooch and gilded silver escutcheon in the form of two spirals each terminating in a beaked head in profile; medieval to post-medieval dress accessories; a Late Saxon disc brooch; a medieval seal matrix and a 13th-century gilded buckle plate with a low relief mythological bird or creature; a medieval/post-medieval handle for a chafing dish or cupboard door, a rotary key and a fragment of probable skillet handle and a post-medieval hinge plate from a small casket, a harness or belt mount, sword belt mount, spur attachment and silver finger ring.

15th century purse-bar with conical knob at each end, and pierced undecorated boss in centre (LMMC type B), swivel loop missing.
Medieval cast copper alloy binding strip from box with two rivet holes, broken at one of them, decorated with moulded ?leaves or animal heads.

Late Saxon bronze animal head 'hollow' foot fragment, trace of rivet hole at break - a bit different!
Medieval bronze belt-fitting fragment strip with trefoil terminal pierced with rivet hole and nicked edges.
Medieval bronze fragment of belt-fitting(?) decorated on both sides with three bands of rocker arm ornament.
Post medieval spur arm terminal and 'knobs'.

1992. Metal detector finds [2a].
Early Saxon escutcheon, gilded silver, two broken shanks on reverse. It is in the form of two spirals each terminating in a beaked head in profile. It is of exceptional quality. Between the two heads is a ribbed rectangular field with a projecting pointed 'lobe'. The heads of the 'birds' are ribbed and non-gilded, and the innermost 'spiral' likewise, probably to show the edge of the neck. The eye is a pellet with a v-shaped 'eyebrow', and the whole is beautifully executed (chip-carved/cast). From shield or box?

Roman tiny one piece Colchester brooch with part of spring surviving but pin and catch plate missing. 1st century AD.
Medieval open end of strap end with terminal missing. Trapezoidal shape with one side decorated with a double line grooved border. Strap was held by two bronze rivets at the corners of the larger side.
