Summary

An undated horseshoe shaped earthwork was identified here during a field visit in 1964. Burnt flints, presumed to be prehistoric in date, have also been recovered from the area. Subsequent investigations suggest that the earthwork may be part of a natural scarp rather than an archaeologically significant feature.

Map

1964.
Pot boilers claimed by [1] on a horseshoe shaped earthwork. More found on bank by [2].

1978. Visit.
This area is entirely overgrown. West of kink in field boundary indicated is all black peat under reeds and flags, making pot boilers improbable. Therefore they were probably found on east side of boundary (old trees) which is equally overgrown, enough to hide an earthwork, but more probably this was just the boundary bank to the formerly cultivated land at the top of the peaty slope.
E. Rose (NAU).

November 1996. Second visit after scrub cleared to erect new fence.
The bank mentioned above is in fact the top of the natural scarp to the marsh. Some yards to the south is an east to west bank lined with old trees, probably a former field boundary, now forming edge of wood of much younger trees. No sign of horseshoe shaped earthwork; possibly informant was misled by kink in top of scarp.
E. Rose (NLA), 7 November 1996.

June 2023. Wendling Beck and Fransham Aerial Investigation and Mapping (AIM) Project.
No earthworks of archaeological significance were identified on the consulted sources, which included visualised lidar data from a survey flown in 2017 (S1). Those earthworks that are visible appear to relate to drainage and quarrying, and thus fall outside the scope of the survey.
S. Tremlett (Norfolk Historic Environment Service), 29 June 2023.
