Full Description
Late 1991. Fieldwalking and metal-detecting.
Found by [1] (finder's Field 48):
1 Bronze Age copper alloy sword blade fragment. Drawn (S1).
2 Early Saxon brooch fragments.
2 ?Early Saxon pottery sherds.
1 undatable pottery sherd.
Identified by J. Davies (NCM), S. Margeson (NCM) and A. Rogerson (NLA). See list and descriptions in file.
A. Rogerson (NLA) 3 March 1992. Amended by P. Watkins (HES),
1994. Stray Find.
Mesolithic or later quartzite pebble mace with hour-glass perforation. Petrology No.N329 (quartzite, not 'cored'). See drawing (S2).
Identified by P. Robins (NCM), see description in file. This discovery was reported in (S3).
Although recorded as probably Mesolithic it should be noted that these objects are generally seen as not closely datable, having been found in both Mesolithic and later prehistoric contexts.
A. Rogerson (NLA) 5 October 1994. Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 5 July 2014.
It is suggested in (S4) that Early Saxon finds from this site and nearby NHERs 25670 and 25670 potentially indicate the presence of a cemetery of this date.
P. Watkins (HES), 6 July 2025.
