Summary

The remains of an adult male, an adult female and five infants were found in 1954 when a small area was excavated at the site of the Saxon cathedral. Medieval pottery fragments were also recovered and, with the male burial, traces of a sword, shield and spur.

1954. Salvage Excavation.
Damaged human skull, of an elderly man, and other bones found in trench at 90cm (3 feet) from surface. Male of 35 to 45 years. Lacks large part of both parietels and occipital squama. Completely edentulous several years ante-mortem. Very prominent supra-orbital ridges of heavy medieval type.
