Full Description
10 July 1986. NAU aerial photography.
Cropmark of ring ditch.
D. Edwards (NAU).
Position by runway of airfield, adjacent marks and unusual extension to one quadrant of 'ring ditch' suggest this may have a military origin.
E. Rose (NLA), 18 March 1993.
Grid reference slightly corrected from plot by D. Edwards (NLA) (S1) January 1997 which shows that the bend in the parish boundary avoids this feature and there is no trace on the 1946 air photographs of any military feature on this spot. Plot (S1) in file.
E. Rose (NLA), 20 January 1997.
29 June 1993. NLA aerial photography.
Possible ring ditch visible, additional rectilinear features apparent. The western half of the ring ditch appears to be enclosed by an elongated rectilinear enclosure, the ditches of which respect the ring ditch and is therefore later.
To immediate east abutting the ring ditch is another rectangular enclosure with three to four sub-angular internal features. On same flight D. Edwards (NLA) takes shots of a recent 'airfete' site. This rectangular enclosure may be the site of one of the temporary stalls and structures.
S. Massey (NLA), 29 January 2001.
29 June 1995. NLA aerial photography.
Cropmarks visible.
However, in addition to the ring ditch, a linear ditched feature can be identified as a cropmark running approximately southwest to northeast with a right angle turn at its most northern point, from where it heads southeast. The southwest to northeast section lies to the northwest of the ring ditch and is about 80m in length. The northwest to southeast section is much shorter (25m), and actually abutts the ring ditch to the northeast.
H. Clare (NLA), 3 August 2001.
26 August 1997. NLA aerial photography.
Cropmarks not clearly visible.
H. Clare (NLA), 29 March 2001.
