Full Description
16 June 1989. NAU air photography.
Trackways and rectangular enclosures are visible in aerial photographs. The trackways are roughly parallel and curve from east to west, in a very unusual manner.
See (S1).
E. Rose (NLA), 5 July 1993.
Potboilers (NHER 7220) have been found in the eastern portion of this field, and a medieval seal matrix and a 17th century dress fastener (NHER 29828) were recovered from the northern portion of the field.
H. Hamilton (NLA), 24 January 2008.
February 2008. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of a large enclosure and/or farmstead, trackway and field boundaries of possible late Iron Age to Roman date are visible on aerial photographs to the southeast of Field Barn Cottages (S1-S3). Although the density of prehistoric finds in this area may indicate earlier activity, the pot boilers (NHER 7220) could indicate a Bronze Age date, although this is not certain and at present a later and predominantly Roman date for the site seems most likely. This site is located approximately 2km to the north of the Roman town at Billingford (NHER 7206).
The large rectilinear enclosure is located at TG 0093 2261 and it measures approximately 100m by 80m, although additional parallel ditches to the south and east may reflect annexes or additions to the enclosure. A number of internal subdividing ditches are also apparent. The enclosure is conjoined to a multi-ditched or braided trackway running from NE to SW. The braiding or recutting of the trackway may indicate a long period of use. Located within the area around the large enclosure are a number of fragmentary ditches and field boundaries, some of which are broadly parallel or perpendicular to the enclosure ditches and are therefore likely to be contemporary. The ditches not following this pattern are likely to be of a different date, some may relate to medieval to post medieval boundary fragments.
S. Massey (NMP), 28 February 2008.
