Up to April 1998. Metal detecting. [3].
Undated mystery object! A D-section curved cast copper alloy rod with, at one end, a wider attachment terminal, and at the other a cast animal head. The attachment terminal appears to originally have been oval; it is now broke in half and has a single rivet hole with iron corrosion. The animal head is schematically modelled with open jaws; a separate copper alloy rivet passes through the muzzle and lower jaw. Possibly part of a handle? The side and neatness of the copper alloy rivet makes it look medieval.
See (S1).
A. Rogerson (NLA), 15 June 1999.
August-September 1999. Metal detecting. [4].
Roman thick flat base of large vessel, a reduced sandy fabric with oxidised exterior. Breaks now rather abraded. Difficult to date, but most likely to be Romano-British.
Pottery I.D. A. Rogerson (NLA).
K. Hinds (NLA), 7 March 2000.
January/February 2003. Metal detecting.
Medieval swivel from leash.
See description in file.
A. Rogerson (NLA), 19 March 2003.
Mystery object found up to April 1998 is part of a rather worn prick spur with riveted terminal for strap similar to those on the complete example from NHER 31655 Surlingham. The rivet near the broken end is probably the proximal end of an iron goad. 9th century, (S7).
Re-identified by S. J. Ashley (NLA) from (S1).
