October 1992. Field Observation.
A small church with a round west tower, nave, chancel, north and south trancepts, and a south porch (the porch is no longer extant). Roman bricks were used in the construction of the round tower, which may be Saxo-Norman in origin. The octagonal belfry may date to c. 1320, but contains some elements that could suggest a Late Perpendicular construction. The nave was widened in the 14th/15th century. The porch appears to have been added in the early 18th century, and indeed is described in Martin's church notes as 'modern' (S3), but was removed at an unknown date. Most of church was rebuilt and the transepts were added in 1810. St. Mary's church is unique in Norfolk as it retains an internal layout and furnishings of early 19th century date.
See unpublished report (S2) for additional details.
E. Rose (NLA), 23 October 1992.
1996. Field Observation.
A more detailed examination of the tower from scaffolding confirmed that the bricks used in its initial construction are Roman. One tegula was identified and the slits at mid-level are probably Roman bricks rubbed down.
