Summary

The cropmarks of a series of field boundaries and trackways are visible on aerial photographs to the northeast of Sparhamhole Plantation. The main components of these cropmarks are marked on the 1844 Bawdeswell Tithe map indicating that they are likely to be post medieval in date, although an earlier origin for some of the boundaries cannot be ruled out.

December 2007. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of a series of field boundaries and trackways are visible on aerial photographs to the northeast of Sparhamhole Plantation (S1-S4). The site is centred on TG 0585 1918. The main components of these cropmarks, in particular the main rectilinear enclosure to the south of the site, are marked on the 1844 Bawdeswell Tithe map (S5) indicating that they are likely to be post medieval in date, although an earlier origin, medieval for example, for some of the boundaries cannot be ruled out. Two possible areas of extraction were identified (extent of area mapped) (S1), although the site is located more generally within an area of variable soils and it may be that these are naturally occurring deeper or darker soil deposits.

A number of the features mapped do to not fit into the general pattern of the post medieval fields and these may represent earlier and unrelated field boundary fragments of unknown date.
S. Massey (NMP), 5 December 2007.
