Full Description
8-12 April 1994. Fieldwalking and Metal-detecting Survey.
Archaeological evaluation of area of proposed gravel pit, Silfield Pit, Rightup Lane. The fieldwalking and metal-detector survey recovered:
1 Late Mesolithic/Early Neolithic flint microlith.
25 ?Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age flint flakes, 1 scraper, 3 notched flakes, 9 retouched flakes (1 on thermal flake), 2 thermal flakes, 2 shatter pieces and 2 spalls.
Medieval/post-medieval tile fragments.
5 post-medieval pottery sherds (including Glazed Red Earthenware, stoneware and basaltware).
1 undatable iron slag lump.
1 modern button.
1 ?modern glass fragment.
All of the finds were sparsely scattered, with no obvious concentrations.

18-19 April 1994. Trial Trenching.
Final stage of archaeological evaluation of area of proposed gravel pit.
No archaeologically significant features were identified in the two trenches excavated (the first 285m long and aligned north-south, the second 90m long and aligned east-west). Find recovered from topsoil and during metal-detecting of stripped surfaces and spoil included:
2 ?prehistoric 'pot boilers'.
1 ?Neolithic core rejuvenation flint flake.
7 ?Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age flint flakes (3 utilised), 4 retouched flakes (2 on thermal flakes), 1 flaked lump, 1 shatter piece and 1 side scraper.
2 Iron Age pottery sherds.
1 Roman pottery sherd (greyware).
1 Roman or Middle Saxon pottery sherd (?Ipswich ware).
7 medieval pottery sherds (Early Medieval Ware, Yarmouth-type ware, Grimston and glazed Grimston).
1 post-medieval pottery sherd (Glazed Red Earthenware).
1 undatable pottery sherd, 1 lead sheet fragment and 1 lead window came fragment.
