Cropmarks of roads of possible Roman or medieval date are visible on aerial photographs (S1-S4). The area of these cropmarks has been extended and the grid reference amended accordingly. Curving negative cropmarks and soilmarks are present on a generally north-west to south-east alignment. Towards their north-west end the cropmarks bifurcate. One branch appears to continue the line of the modern Norwich Road to the west whilst the other continues as a cropmark to the north-west (NHER 49668). To the south of Hall Road, which cuts across the cropmarks, they bifurcate again. The main branch curves to the south and appears to lead to the modern Mill Road. The other branch continues for a short distance to the south-east. A further section of linear cropmark links the two branches to the south of where they split. These cropmarks and soilmarks relate to former roads. Their relationship to several modern roads suggests that parts are probably of medieval date. However, the north-west branch appears to continue the line of a possible Roman road (NHER 49668) and may indicate an earlier origin for the road. It is possible that it is of Roman origin with additional sections added at a later date as the road network evolved.
