Summary

A moated site. Of the remaining moat, the east and west sides are wide and water filled, the north side dry. The south side of the moat would have been where the present 18th century farmhouse stands. The central island where the medieval house would have stood is now partly garden, partly wilderness.

Map

Apparent moat at Pound Farm.
Ordnance Survey Inspectors say probably not a moat because it has only three sides and there are dry ditches forming subdivisions. They suggest a pound.

East side of moat is waterfilled, wide and overgrown. North side dry, about 1.8m (6 feet) deep (plank bridge). West side waterfilled, huge about 4,5m (15 feet) across at top, 2.4m (8 feet) deep. The south side would be where the present 18th century farmhouse (which has a good Norwich Union fire insurance plaque) stands. The 'internal divisions' consist of one long oblong pond as shown on Ordnance Survey, perhaps later in date, and a central dry ditch about 0.9m (3 feet) deep running north to south, beginning at north arm of moat, vanishing under house lawn but reappearing briefly in house yard (it is marked as east boundary of orchard on 6 inch Ordnance Survey). Island is now part garden and part wilderness of huge nettles, suggesting building remains buried. This is certainly a moat, perhaps with central division as others in area (NHER 3080, 3081) but this could be just the old orchard boundary. Certainly not a pound.
