Summary

Metal detecting between 1994 and 2022 at this site has recovered a variety of finds dating from the Roman to the post-medieval period. These finds include Middle Saxon pottery sherds; Roman, Middle Saxon, medieval and post-medieval coins; post-medieval tokens; post-medieval jettons and a various other, undated and Late Iron Age/Roman to post-medieval metal objects. These metal finds include undated copper alloy rings, copper alloy possible casting waste and a silver offcut; Late Bronze Age awl; a Late Iron Age/Roman brooch; Roman brooches, a cosmetic mortar, possible toilet implement, nail-cleaner strap end, steelyard arm, furniture mount, copper alloy hairpin and copper alloy nail; a Roman/Early Saxon military buckle frame; Early Saxon brooches, buckles, a girdle hanger fragment and mount; a Early/Middle Saxon buckle and spatula; Middle Saxon tweezers and a pin; Middle/Late Saxon pins, strap ends and a hooked tag; a Late Saxon brooch, stirrup-strap mount, pin, Anglo-Scandinavian bridle cheek piece and lead probable Viking gaming piece; medieval to post-medieval dress accessories (including a medieval silver annular brooch); medieval mounts, a mirror case, casket key, possible binding strip from box or casket, end cap from whittle-tang knife, suspension unit or holder for lamp/censer, thimble or sewing ring, copper alloy seal matrix and lead weights; a possible medieval lead weight; a medieval/post-medieval pin and iron padlock fragment and post-medieval harness mounts, ball-headed pin and lead weight. The whole assemblage is indicative of a large Roman to Early Medieval settlement, and Early Saxon cemetery complex which encompasses NHER 3565, NHER 11743, NHER11816, NHER 25765, NHER 30690, and NHER 30754.

1985. Systematic Fieldwalking and Trial Trenching.
Gridded fieldwalking of area south-eastern part of field. Four trial trenches were also excavated.
The only evidence for what was found during this work appears to be a plot showing the location of the trenches and the distribution of the Middle Saxon pottery sherds recovered (S4). The plot also shows the distribution of Middle Saxon sherds recovered during earlier fieldwalking in the field to the east [6].
