Full Description
1995.
Sub rectangular, mainly ditched enclosures in grassland to north of Summerend Common. Particularly in eastern half, subdivision by ditches and banks, with some platforms (including one with likely flint wall length) suggest a series of tofts with outer variable enclosures. One platform in northwest of eastern field oddly positioned to others. Possible trackway as boundary with common, but not completely convincing. West of Summerend Common, a natural irregular platform has medieval brick and roof tile fragments.
Pottery finds:
TF 7504 1543 - one medieval unglazed body sherd.
TF 7498 1538 - one base with internal glaze, Grimston Ware bowl.
TF 7494 1536 - one Thetford type bowl rim (Grimston/Thetford) body sherd.
One medieval unglazed body sherd.
One glazed Grimston body sherd.
TF 7467 1521 - One sherd late medieval/transitional ware.
Two medieval roofing tile fragments.
Two medieval brick fragments.
Identified by A. Rogerson (NLA).
B. Cushion (NLA), January 1995.
December 1996. Earthwork Survey.
Survey at 1:1000 for the eastern half of the site which has the most convincing features.
To the north and west of Summer End Cottage the features are interpreted as either natural or purely drainage, probably post medieval. The mound to the west of the cottage has again provided some fragments of medieval roof tile.
Further pottery:
One unglazed Grimston Ware bow rim.
Two medieval unglazed body sherds.
Four glazed Grimston body sherds and one Late medieval/transitional ware handle.
Identified by A. Rogerson (NLA).
See report (S1) for plan and additional details. This site was included in (S2).
B. Cushion (NLA) January 1997. Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 8 April 2015.
December 2000.
