Summary

Metal-detecting at this location between 1995 and 2020 recovered an undatable stone bead; Roman and Middle Saxon coins and a range of other metal objects, including part of a Late Bronze Age socketed axehead; Roman brooches, a hair pin, bracelet fragment, nail cleaner and patera handle fragment; a Late Saxon bridle cheek piece; a probable Late Saxon silver ingot; medieval belt fittings and silver pilgrim badge and a post-medieval silver head-dress pin and ring made from plaited silver wire.

Roman brooch. Dolphin type with spring mechanism, bow with square section, three grooves running length of bow and around wings. 1st century. Identified J. Davies (NCM).
13th century belt stiffener, gilded, with brambled central boss.

Roman nail cleaner, incomplete, decorated on one side with ring-and-dot and grooved pattern.
Part of Roman bracelet, decorated with groups of three notches, alternating on either side of band.
Two Roman brooches:
Dolphin type, hinge mechanism, 1st century.
Trumpet type, bow only, with acanthus-style decoration. 1st/2nd century.

Late Saxon silver probable ingot.
Medieval silver pilgrim badge depicting St George and the dragon.
Post-medieval silver head-dress pin (bodkin) and small ring made from plaited silver wire (most likely decoration from the hilt of a sword or rapier).
Information from PAS import.
The probable Late Saxon silver ingot, medieval silver pilgrim badge and the post-medieval silver head-dress pin were all submitted as potential Treasure (Refs: 2020 T686, 2020 T513 and 2020 T507 respectively). The medieval badge and the post-medieval pin were both disclaimed as Treasure and returned to the finder.
The post-medieval silver ring did not constitute potential Treasure as it cannot be shown to be more than 300 years old (being associated with a likely date range of c.1630 to c.1780).
Site extended to the whole field. Previous extent recorded as Context 1.
