Summary

In 1995, a banked rectangular earthwork enclosure was revealed within a recently felled conifer plantation. It was once common practice on heathland in Breckland to grow plantations within such enclosures.

Earthwork enclosure about 45m by 45m located within recently felled coniferous plantation. Banks survived to height of 25cm and width of about 1.5m. Noted on 1:10,000 map by Ordnance Survey. No new planting taken place yet. Recently felled Scots pine timber stacked on edge of ride to north, possibly damaging north corner.

Tithe map shows this enclosure to be a small plantation enclosure.
The banking of early plantations on heath was a common phenomenon in Breckland (compare to Suffolk sites at Elveden [ELV 034] and Knettishall [KNE 021]).
