Full Description
October 1995. Metal detecting rally.
Found in area centred [1] (now Context 1):
1 Roman coin.
See list in file.
A. Rogerson (NLA), 27 November 1995.
1995. Metal detecting rally.
Almost certainly same site as previously reported find:
1) Middle Saxon disc brooch and sunken cruciform motif with incurved sides and a sunken 'roundel' in each spondrel (traces of enamel survive). Neat lug and catchplate on reverse. Very worn surface.
2) Medieval strap end. Two plated and spacer plate. Elaborate cut out terminal with cast acorn. Rocker arm ornament on front.
Identified by S. Margeson (NCM), 1995.
Polaroid (S1) in file.
W. Milligan (NCM), 8 February 1996 and A. Rogerson (NLA), 2 April 2000.
February 2004. Systematic Fieldwalking and Metal-detecting Survey. Contexts 1-193. Site expanded to whole field.
Finds included:
102 prehistoric struck flints, including 7 blades, 1 bladelet, 4 scrapers, and 2 piercers.
24 burnt flint fragments.
2 prehistoric pottery sherds.
9 medieval pottery sherds and 1 fragment ceramic building material.
3 medieval to post-medieval pottery sherds.
11 post-medieval pottery sherds, 2 clay pipe fragments and 12 fragments ceramic building material.
1 16th century book clasp.
1 post-medieval silver coin.
Copper alloy coin, tokens, buckles, and bone comb.
31 objects of non-archaeological value.
The flint assemblage from this site most likely dates primarily to the later prehistoric period (Later Neolithic to Iron Age), but a few blades within the collection suggest a possible Mesolithic or Early Neolithic element. Three retouched tools were recovered from the same context.
Post-medieval pottery and ceramic building material was clustered towards the centre of the field, possibly indicating the presence of a former structure such as a post-medieval barn.
See report (S2) for further details. The results of this work are also summarised in (S3).
The associated archive has been deposited with the Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2017.431).
Previously recorded under NHER 40133.
A. Cattermole (NLA), 4 August 2004. Amended by H. Hamilton (HES), 19 May 2015 and P. Watkins (HES), 21 July 2019 and 23 March 2021.
