Summary

A medieval/post medieval house sits inside this medieval moat. The house was built in the late medieval period. A floor and two chimneys were added in the 17th century and there are wall paintings on one of the chimneys. A large pond to the east of the house is probably the remains of a medieval moat.

1996. Field Survey.
Moated site - pond to east of building appears to have formed east arm of an older moated site.
Probably a late medieval hallhouse with inserted upper floor; the original frame probably dates to c. 1500. Floored over in 17th century when remarkably two stacks were inserted, one to convert services to kitchen, the other to provide two 'parlour' type fireplaces in hall and parlour. A screen wall was made to reproduce the line of the screens. 'Upper Cruck' roof structure rests on first floor beams. Wallpaintings on main chimneystack.
See report (S1) for further details. These observations are also summarised in (S2) and (S3).
