NHER 32093 (Monument record) - Prehistoric tool, Iron Age to post medieval objects

Summary

Following tidal scouring of the beach in 1996, a topsoil surface was exposed, containing numerous pieces of medieval and post medieval pottery. Also found were fragments of Iron Age and possibly Early Saxon pottery, worked and burnt flints and fragments of lava quern. Cut into the clay below this layer were pits and ditches, some containing Roman pottery fragments and some with medieval fragments. Metal detecting in the same area in 2000 recovered a medieval coin and buckles and post medieval objects.

Full Description

September 1996. Tidal scour of upper beach.
Abraded relict ploughsoil with medieval and late medieval/Transitional sherds, stonewares and Iron Age sherds (some possibly Early Saxon).
Worked flints, some burnt.
Fragments of lava quern.
Cut into clay below are pits and ditches, some containing unabraded Roman sherds, some with medieval sherds. Some animal teeth.
